craft has an mcp server now
ai, meet your cms.
craft 5.12 came out last week with an mcp server built right into the cms. no plugin, no extra service. you point claude (or chatgpt, or cursor) at your site, sign in, and it can work with your content directly.
i spent a few days putting it through 17 real tasks on a test site. here’s what stood out:
-
it’s you, not a robot. the ai signs in as you and gets your permissions, nothing more. read only is the default.
-
drafts just work. ask it to rewrite an article and it makes a draft. the live entry stays put until someone applies it.
-
schema in seconds. i asked for an events section with fields and sample entries. it took 79 seconds and cost about 50 cents.
-
a public, read-only server. no login. you pick which sections it can see, and a site chatbot or ai search can answer questions from them.
the public server is the part i find most interesting. it’s a safe way to let ai tools read your site without handing anyone the keys.
it’s not perfect. error messages are vague, and full access can delete things with no undo. but for a first release, it’s really solid.
i wrote up the full test, with screenshots and the bugs i hit (two of them are already fixed), over on the viget blog: your craft cms site can talk to ai now. read about it more there!
